I was raised very religious, but never took it seriously as a kid. Only when something terrible would happen, I would pray nonstop. Like the time my hamster got sick and I had to just wait for an outcome. I only prayed when I felt powerless. Now being secular, I don't have anything to pray for. It's probably nice to have something like that, a place or thing to pray for. Doing something, even symbolically is better then doing absolutely nothing.
